Backbites | Sousei no Aquarion (Episodes 11-13) |
Now in Japan | Written by maehara | Saturday, 11 November 2006 00:00 | Sousei no Aquarion gets away from the immensely daft standalone episodes and finally throws some substance into the mix - and not before time. There are revelations galore, as the past connection between Apollonius and Toma is revealed and Sirius and Sylvia turn out to be not entirely human... 11 - The Happiness of the Water's Depths Reika's bad fortune seems to be at work again, with Glen, one of the Aquarion crew, in a deep coma. And the weather's lousy, too. The end result is a deep depression for Reika, which the Commanders sees as a problem - she can hardly perform at her best when worried that everything she does will somehow lead to misfortune. Her luck doesn't seem to be getting any better, either, so she eventually decides to leave the Aquarion base, hopefully taking her bad luck with her. As luck would have it, her train encounters a strange phenomenon - one that's already taken a number of children, and now Reika could be the next victim...
12 - The Time of Amber An underwater archaeological site produces an unusual find - a single feather, sealed in amber and dated to have been from around 12,000 years ago. That's unusual in itself, as amber shouldn't be able to properly form in that short of time - so perhaps it's something from the time of the Winged Angels? Commander Fudo's orders for nobody to touch the feather only succeed in piquing Apollo's curiosity, so along with Sylvia he breaks into the vault - and together they discover the past. Meanwhile, Toma makes plans for retrieving the feather - and he's not planning to play fair... 13 - The 12,000-Year-Old Love Letter Apollo comes face-to-face with Toma, who would quite like to have a word with him about events 12,000 years ago. While Apollo's only been introduced to his past, Toma remembers it in vivid detail and relates some of the details - by way of introduction before beginning the task of killing him. Facing defeat, Aquarion retreats back within the barrier shield, but when Apollo realises that Toma has Baron with him, the temptation to rescue his friend is too much to bear - but saving Baron may just bring greater disaster on the Aquarion base...
Episode 11 is the last of the standalone episodes, for now at least, and follows the usual Aquarion formula to the letter. I'll admit I didn't pay much attention to it, as Reika's probably my least favourite character in the series (all the whining about her 'misfortune' annoys me immensely) and she's the star of the show here, so I lost interest quite quickly. Fortunately, things really pick up in episodes 12 & 13, as finally the tip-toeing around the subject of Apollonius and Sylvien ends and we get to see at least a portion of what happened 12,000 years previously. As events play out, it at first looks certain that Apollo & Syvlia are the modern reincarnations of the previous pair - a star-crossed couple whose fate could give Romeo & Juliet a run for their money - but episode 13 throws some more information into the mix that brings Sirius back into the equation. My bet's still on Apollo being the important one, but we'll see. The really interesting bit was Toma's involvement in events past, which turns his current involvement into a very personal matter. Aquarion's earlier episodes were fun but daft. The arc episodes here are on a whole different level, and were hugely enjoyable - and with no requirement to cringe at any point, which was a first for this series. Whether this is just a short mid-season story arc before we get back to the usual formula or it's the start of the story moving on to a new stage, I don't know, but more of this style of episode would be very welcome. Good stuff. |
